We’re off on a new project starting today with this new iteration of my long time blog Common Sense and Whiskey, now on SubStack. Common Sense and Whiskey started as a travel blog more than ten years ago and I’ve gradually widened its scope over time, so that nowadays, I aim to deliver a good sharp look at current events in the world around us, along with my original orientation toward travel, or more broadly, seeing and appreciating the wider world around us.
From 2013 CS&W was hosted on Wordpress (and on TypePad before that) and I sincerely thank the subscribers who are making the move with me from there to here on Substack. I welcome, too, my Twitter followers and the 2000+ followers of my Twitter list of experts on Russia’s war on Ukraine, and I encourage you to stop by CS&W regularly and to please share, participate and add your comments often.
Here’s what I have planned: I’ll share new content at least twice most weeks. Most Tuesdays I’ll post a travel-themed article, most Saturdays I’ll write a column about what has caught my eye in the world in the past week, and on other days from time to time I’ll share random “where in the world” photo quizzes, recommendations of further reading that’s worth your time, and whatever else I may be thinking.
I intend to keep the bulk of CS&W free to everyone. If you like what you’re reading, think of yourself as a patron supporting a good effort, and consider subscribing at $5.00 a month or whatever you feel is fair. Rest easy, I won’t hard sell this site. If you’re new here, I hope you find CS&W comfortable to visit, and if you’re coming over from CS&W at Wordpress, thanks and I hope you continue to enjoy it here.
Just a bit of housekeeping: The publishing schedule will run on U.S. eastern time. If you’d like to communicate in real time, the most likely time to find me in the office is between 10:00 and noon US ET. If things go to plan I’ll be posting from abroad in March, April and later in the summer, and those posts may wander farther than usual from the schedule. But they ought to be fun.
Join me on Twitter (as long as Twitter’s around, at least), @BillMurrayWriter. Next Tuesday I’ll post my first travel column about a trip to the fairly obscure eastern Greenland town of Tasiilaq, and my first weekly current events column will run tomorrow.
Please be gentle if I get some formatting wrong here at first as I kick the tires, slam the doors and get used to how this thing works.
Thanks for joining me. This should be fun.
Bill
